Design Myths Exposed

Learn the truth about kitchen islands

There’s really no doubt that including a kitchen island in your new Kitchen Craft kitchen design will add many unique decorative and functional aspects to your end result. There are, however some common myths and misconceptions related to kitchen islands that we hope to dispel in this article. Let’s take a look.

Kitchen Islands are Pre-Fabricated

Actually, your kitchen island is designed to suit you and your style, needs and unique taste. In other words, your island is not ‘canned’. Your Kitchen Craft designer will work with you to incorporate an island into your overall kitchen design based on the specific tasks you need it to perform for you. When your kitchen order is ready for installation, your experienced Kitchen Craft Installer and their team will construct your island on-site from all of the components set out in your final design.

A Kitchen Island Has to Match the Rest of the Kitchen

Obviously you will want your kitchen island to look aesthetically pleasing in relation to the rest of your cabinets. But that doesn’t mean it has to use the same finish colour or even the same door style.

Don’t be afraid to mix things up between your main cabinet layout and your island. For example, you could use a solid colour like a paint, or event a thermofoil on your cabinets, then go with a finish and wood species on the island that will not only enhance the look of that wood, but also help the island work in conjunction with everything else.

An Island Can Only Serve One Purpose

Our final kitchen island myth is probably the one which holds folks back from adding one to their new kitchen the most. Many people still believe that a island can serve only one purpose. In actual fact, the possibilities are almost endless when it comes to the list of possible functions your new island can perform. Here’s a quick list of a few tasks that modern kitchen islands can do for you:

  • Storage for food, utensils, dishes, table linens and much more
  • Cooking with a built-in cook-top, microwave or oven
  • Recycling and/or waste centre
  • Incorporating a second sink is always handy
  • Entertaining with a raised or lowered seating area
  • Food prep area to free up your regular countertop space

Remember that you can rely on the experience and expertise of your Kitchen Craft designer and their extended team to create a kitchen design you will love.
