Thinking Outside the Kitchen
Cabinets: the essential Home design element
Cabinets are an essential element in home design, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal. From the kitchen to the bathroom – even in the garage – cabinets provide valuable storage solutions while enhancing the overall look of each space. In this article, we will explore the versatility and importance of cabinets in rooms outside of the kitchen and bathroom, highlighting how they can be tailored to meet specific needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking to maximize storage, organize your belongings, or add a touch of style, cabinets play a crucial role in creating a well-organized and visually pleasing home environment.

laundry room
Let’s face it, there are very few people in the world who actually “enjoy” doing the laundry, right? So when we set out to create a space to inspire and delight you with our cabinet designs, we want to add some additional flair and pizzazz to what is typically a mundane, single-purpose room used to wash dry and fold clothes.

If you have the space for it, creating a laundry/multi-purpose room in your home is a terrific idea because is adds so much more appeal and function. Here are just a few ways that we took one design to the next level.
- Colour-matched open shelving along the back wall with a countertop below for easy access to the items you use most often
- Totally unique “laundry island” with back-to-back base cabinets for extra storage, room for at least 2 people to fold clothes, do homework, crafts or even online webinars while the rinse cycle happens in the background
- A solid surface waterfall countertop on the island not only matches the same treatment surrounding the laundry machines, but also adds stability and makes this high-traffic space virtually indestructible
- A tall cabinet in the corner, along with more deep cabinets above the washer and dryer provide ample, easy-to-access storage for linens or surplus cleaning supplies
- The easy addition of a functioning blackboard and cork board adjacent to the island can be used for bust family communications or displaying a budding young artist’s latest masterpiece
To add that finishing touch, we’ve also incorporated a pair of large sliding ‘barn doors’ with semi-translucent glass from top to bottom to help partially conceal the room if desired (but we honestly don’t know why you’d want to hide this space). Also tucked neatly in beside the adjacent hallway are 2 inset cubbies that feature tall wall cabinets with matching black interiors and no doors for easier access, plus small pocket drawers below, and even some hanging rods underneath for even more function in this space.

Craft Room
Whether you’re searching for some clever organization solutions or thinking about transforming that extra room in your home into a crafting room or studio, we have plenty of ideas to help you turn your space into a haven of creativity.

Best Location for Your New Craft Area
If space is limited, you can try integrating your craft area into an existing room that already has a purpose. This could be a small, normally unused space adjacent to the kitchen perhaps, or even that corner of the basement that wasn’t updated when you finished the lower level of your home. No space in the kitchen or basement corner available? Consider these spots:
- An extra bedroom
- An extra walk-in or reach-in closet that’s not being used
- That extra space within or adjacent to your laundry room with easy access to water if needed
- An empty corner, hallway or landing at the top of a flight of stairs
- An under-used loft or even a room in the attic
Function and convenience are designed into our office cabinets thanks to features such as easy-access file drawers and rollout trays. Or, add a charging station to ensure all your office gadgets and tools are fully charged and at-the-ready.

Start slowly, with a clear vision of how you want your room to look, the type(s) of crafting that you’ll be doing in there, and then make a comprehensive list of all the necessary features your completed space will need. For example, if you love to paint, be sure to leave space to position your easel near a window with lots of natural light. Is sewing your thing? Use base cabinets, wall cabinets, a solid surface top and even some small pocket drawers to create a sewing station complete with enough space for your machine, plus some easy-to-reach thread storage. As a finishing touch, you can even mark out a focal point to show off and display all of your recently finished projects.
Along with having a large, dedicated work surface, be sure that your new craft space has ample storage for all of your supplies, and use some clever ideas to help keep everything neat and organized. Remember, a room that’s tidy and easy to maintain will help you stay focused on your crafts, not on how your room looks. You can achieve this very easily by speaking with an experienced designer at your Kitchen Craft Retail Store location. They’ll show you how you can transform bare walls into efficient, floor-to-ceiling storage shelves and/or cabinetry.
