Common Kitchen Island Myths Dispelled

There’s really no doubt that including a kitchen island in your new Kitchen Craft kitchen design will add many unique decorative and functional aspects to your end result.

There are, however some common myths and misconceptions related to kitchen islands that we hope to dispel in this article. Let’s take a look.

MYTH 1: Kitchen Islands are Pre-Fabricated

Actually, your kitchen island is designed to suit you and your style, needs and unique taste. In other words, your island is not ‘canned’.

Your Kitchen Craft designer will work with you to incorporate an island into your overall kitchen design based on the specific tasks you need it to perform for you. See MYTH 3 below.

When your kitchen order is ready for installation, your experienced Kitchen Craft Installer and their team will construct your island on-site from all of the components set out in your final design.

Your Kitchen Island is installed just like the rest of the Kitchen

MYTH 2: A Kitchen Island Has to Match the Rest of the Kitchen

Obviously you will want your kitchen island to look aesthetically pleasing in relation to the rest of your cabinets. But that doesn’t mean it has to use the same finish colour or even the same door style.

Don’t be afraid to mix things up between your main cabinet layout and your island. For example, you could use a solid colour like a paint, or event a thermofoil on your cabinets, then go with a finish and wood species on the island that will not only enhance the look of that wood, but also help the island work in conjunction with everything else.

Kitchen Craft offers over 3,000 standard colour/style combinations, or take advantage of our Kitchen Craft Custom Colour Program as well.

That’s right. You can take the look of your new kitchen island to the next level by finishing it in literally any colour that you want. To learn more about the Custom Colour Program, click here.

MYTH 3: An Island Can Only Serve One Purpose

Our final kitchen island myth is probably the one which holds folks back from adding one to their new kitchen the most. Many people still believe that a island can serve only one purpose.

In actual fact, the possibilities are almost endless when it comes to the list of possible functions your new island can perform. Here’s a quick list of a few tasks that modern kitchen islands can do for you:

  • Storage for food, utensils, dishes, table linens and much more
  • Cooking with a built-in cook-top, microwave or oven
  • Recycling and/or waste centre
  • Incorporating a second sink is always handy
  • Entertaining with a raised or lowered seating area
  • Food prep area to free up your regular countertop space

Incorporating a beautiful and functional island into your new kitchen design is a great way to improve your space. We hope that you won’t be held back by any of these common myths, and rely on the experience and expertise of your Kitchen Craft designer and their extended team to create a kitchen design (with an island) you will love for years.

Five Things to Consider When Planning Your Kitchen Project

Five Things to Consider When Planning Your Kitchen Project

Before you come see one of our experienced Kitchen Craft kitchen designers, you should have a well thought out plan in order for your kitchen project to be successful.

Your Kitchen Craft designer will be focused on three main things: creating a kitchen design that will work with your lifestyle, fulfills your needs and dreams and most of all that fits within your budget.

Let’s take a quick look at 5 things you’ll need to carefully consider before you book your kitchen design project appointment.

SummitMWn.K.tif

1. How Much Are You Willing To Spend?

You should level with your designer as to just how much you will be willing to spend on your kitchen project.

Let the designer know just what you would feel comfortable spending. This way you can insure that they will have a clear direction on where to go with the project and not go overboard. They will have a good idea of the limits when drawing up plans and selecting materials.

Consider the time it will realistically take for your new kitchen project

2. How Much Time Are You Willing To Devote?

You need to consider what your personal needs are, and if you will be able to work around the necessary construction in your kitchen. By consulting with an experienced Kitchen Craft designer you can get a good idea of how long your kitchen project will take by providing a timeline that you and the rest of your family can plan around.

3. What Style Are You Planning For Your Kitchen Project?

You’ll want to give your kitchen designer as much information as possible. As a result, you need to do some research and make a few decisions prior to your first meeting with them.

First you should look at our website’s inspiration gallery, design magazines and/or other online resources, such as Pinterest or Houzz to get an idea of what style and design elements you would like to see for your kitchen.

Compile these ideas and take notes about your likes and dislikes regarding things such as colour and style. Put together a scrapbook or mood board with clips and imagess, as well as examples of materials and design elements you would like to see in the kitchen.

Use these to show your Kitchen Craft designer what your “vision” is for your new space. It’s also important to bring a list of questions you’ve gathered along the way for your kitchen designer as well.

Consider how you will be using your new kitchen

4. How Do You Use Your Kitchen?

You need to be prepared for questions that your designer will ask you when you meet with them. Among the questions that you may be asked are:

Will you be doing a lot of entertaining with family and friends in your kitchen?

Is your family busy during the week with lots of activities?

How much storage for food, dishes, cutlery, small appliances, etc. do you need?

5. How To Prepare For Your Kitchen Design Project?

You will need to prepare for the disruption that will be caused by your new kitchen project. But by working closely with your Kitchen Craft designer and their extended team, and with the right planning you can make the project run as smoothly and a quickly as possible.

You need to make sure that your kitchen project area and your main living area are separate for both safety reasons and to stay out of the way of our Kitchen Craft Installer and their crew.

Also consider that you might have to set up a ‘temporary kitchen’ in another room of your house. That being said, the time of the year when you schedule your kitchen project can make it easier on everyone since, in the warmer months it is possible to eat and cook outdoors if need be.

Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Using these tips, and relying on the experience and expertise of your Kitchen Craft designer and their extended team will make every aspect of your kitchen project, from planning to final installation, a dream come true.
